75. Can I Really Do Anything With This Liberal Arts Major? With Tim Grassley
75. Can I Really Do Anything With This Liberal Arts Major? With Tim Grassley
In this episode, I interview Tim Grassley, from the University of Colorado at Boulder, College of Arts and Sciences. In this episode we talk about:
-Going from engineering, then computer science, then literature majors, then into a creative writing Master’s degree. He has worked as a landscaper in Austria, a carpenter, grant writing, founded an anti-trafficking organization in India, barista at Starbucks, higher education as an academic advisor, training and development, and now into marketing and branding.
-How the pool for students is shrinking, giving students more options because institutions will compete for students
-Going from getting A’s and feeling like an idiot in one major and transitioning to literature, getting worse grades, but getting the validation he needed
-What it’s like to feel overwhelmed with the idea that “You can do anything with this major”
-Leaving Texas (it’s a big deal!)
-Anxiety around getting a job and picking “the right” thing
-How Liberal Arts can help you study widely, develop critical thinking skills, and the ability to rapidly adapt.
-How to prepare for a job that doesn’t exist yet ----- Thinking about doing an entire podcast on this one… you interested!?!?
